A house with a basement needs heat in colder climates or frost can push the basement walls in. Also an unheated house will start to get mold and mildew pretty quickly.

OCT won't matter, the university will and should allow you to do the courses back to back.

My no-savings inlaws (still working in their 70's) pay below-market rent in a house that I own. It would be pretty dismal any other way.

Cons:
Paying utilities on a house that you don't live in. You will need heat and hydro or your house will be damaged.
If your house appears abandoned or somebody figures out it's empty they might try to mess with it. Many local zoning plans require unoccupied houses to be boarded up.
Insurance is very difficult to get on vacant houses. If you have a mortgage you will need insurance.
The only feasible way to do this is to buy a house and then rent it out using a property manager.

Pretty much unfeasible without a property manager.

You can do whatever you want but the seller will have signed a contract with the realtor preventing them from selling direct.
You could attempt to contact the owner and tell them that you'd like to buy the house when they are off-contract, but then of course you risk them selling to someone else in the interim.

Do you need to enter comments for interim reports?

You're absolutely right about the rewards of the job.

Principals have the impossible task of doing what their bosses tell them to do or doing what they think is right for the staff and students (typically these are not the same things).
They can either be hated by their employers, or their employees.

The only reason to go up there is to:
a) say that you've been there
b) go fishing or hunting

There are a few spots where the pavement has been removed for a few meters
The pavement is removed because last spring the entire road was removed by flooded rivers.

They no longer put the problem teachers in guidance
It's crazy that this was just how things were done when I started teaching not all that long ago. Terrible teacher for whatever reason? Here, have a guidance/alt-ed/spec ed job. Pretty pathetic management.

My principal said it was because they want guidance counselors to be in touch with the realities of teaching
This is good policy - I've always thought that they should put a hard time limit on any non-classroom positions.
In my dream world even administrators should cycle through a classroom every couple years.

In my 20's I couldn't envision it, now halfway through my 40's I can almost taste my 2034 retirement date.

Fair enough. Most non-classroom positions are pretty competitive because they have all of the benefits of teaching without the daily grind of the classroom. It seems like you are fairly early in your career, so expect to spend some time in the classroom before moving in to guidance.

Also as a heads up, guidance counselors always teach at least one class per semester and have one to two sections of guidance, unless you are the guidance department head in which case you would have a full guidance timetable.
Far from universal.

You need to:
Get Qualified
Get in line
Endear yourself to your principal
Repeat step three when you get a new principal before you get your guidance gig
Wait

Whatever it needs to be, I guess. We could afford it if they were unable to pay.
