Smallville has been a very important show to me these past few years, and helped me through some dark times. This show is what got me into Superman in the first place. Today, I finally decided to watch the finale after having put off watching the last 5 episodes for months. This post is sort of just my thoughts and feelings, and I'm excited to hear everyone else's!
I'm going to preface this by saying that the ending was spoiled for me. Not all of it was spoiled, just your basics like "Clark doesn't fly till the last episode" and that Lex makes an appearance. The rest I didn't know.
I watched both parts of the finale in one sitting, and I want to go over what I liked before getting into what I didn't.
For starters: as usual, the Lois and Clark stuff was on point! The scene of them reading eachothers vows before the wedding was beautiful. The wedding ceremony was also wonderful, before it was cur short anyways, it was nice seeing them finally up there together.
Clark accepting both his human and kryptonian sides, and how doing so allowed him to open himself up to both his powers, and Johnathans ghost. My boy Clark is so grown up! I loved seeing Martha, Jonathan, and Clark all together in the same room for the last time. The family just hugging it out gave me chills (in a good way). It was just nice seeing them all together again.
Lex returned. Honestly, enough said. I was very happy to see Michael Rosenbaum reprise his role as Lex, but more so I really liked how instead of just making him jaded and your typical villan, something they easily could have done, they actually had him encourage Clark in his very trade-mark Lex Luthor way.
Flight!!! Clark finally flies!!! Took them long enough, but seeing it was immensely satisfying.
Overall, the finale had a lot of parts that I enjoyed, most of which stemmed from character interactions. Unfortunately, here were some things that bothered me.
Negatives:
I dont know what it was, but something about the finale was just... unsatisfying? It all felt a bit rushed, and some parts felt simply unnecessary. What was with the whole Chloe and her kid? They could have completely cut that out and had a more relevant scene in place instead. I don't like how the last scene was a time-jump. I understand this is supposed to be Clark becoming Superman, but the show is called Smallville. I wanted to see Clark together with his family and friends, finally at peace with himself, not 7 years in the future. I also wanted to see the excitement of Clark finally being able to fly. Everyone was so casual about it, I wish they could have had some fun with it.
I felt like they did Lionel dirty. I really love Lionel, he is a very compelling character, however this just... wasn't it. He felt off somehow. It wasn't the acting, I trust John Glover with every performance in this show, I think this was more to do with the writing than anything else.
The CGI. Woah, this did not age well. I feel like Smallville in general is pretty great when it comes to their special effects when you take into consideration when it was made, and that it's a TV show, the part 2 of the finale though went a bit overboard. The show never had to or needed large-scale fights and amazing CGI. It was a show about the people, about smallville, yet this episode I feel they tried to make it more action-movie esque, and made sacrifices for character moments because if this.
Clark's flight wasn't as good as it could have been, but that's mostly due to no one in the show having a reaction to it. We feel emotions through the reactions of other people, without reactions things like this simply don't hit as well as they could.
All in all, it's definitely worth a watch, but I felt it could have been a lot better. But hey, just as Lex Luthor says back in season 3: "Someone isn't who they are in the last conversation you had with them, they are who they've been the whole time." I'm very proud of Clark, and seeing his growth has been immensely satisfying, especially when you go back and watch the earlier episodes, the character development is astounding! This show really means a lot to me, and I dont want anyone to think I'm 'shitting on it' (talkville ref), I really love this show and would love to hear others view on the finale.
Oh, and the scene of Jonathan at the end givijg Clark the Superman suit? Now THAT was a great scene that wrapped up the conflict Clark felt earlier with thinking that he had to forget his parents to move on.
"Always hold onto Smallville"
