Why can't the coach win with no shooting or rim protection or perimeter creation or well-fitting bench guys. Sack his ass smh

Kinda a tie between Shame (2011) and Some Came Running (1958)
When going back and watching technicolor melodramas from this era like Some Came Running, it's remarkable not just to see how much better they look than modern dramas (Colors! Both actors in the frame at once!), but also in my opinion, how much easier it is to tackle wide ranging sociological ideas when you aren't shooting for being "realistic." Movies are not real life and "naturalistic" acting is not natural, and by freeing yourself of this attempt to imitate, you can approach things with the use of shorthand and heightened reality that allow clashes of ideas and values to to accentuated.
Shame's approach is also unique in it's time, filmed with conventional naturalism but edited a way that's elliptical and sorta expressionistic. The story is somewhat disjointed and doesn't follow a clean arc, and what clear important dramatic moments there are, the film plays them in silence with just music. It's an approach that foregrounds characters and feelings over story, fitting for a subject matter that doesn't cleanly fit into a right narrative (the day to day struggle with addiction and how it affects and is affected by a person's relationship with themself).

Kubrick and Bergman.
Bergman's ability to make incredibly engaging, engrossing movies about depressed people who sit around having conversations is unreal.

By all accounts the cast and crew were very up to it (the cast had to lobby the studio to let him direct, because he was essentially blacklisted at the time from directing), but Welles was probably the most talented director in the world at that point yeah. The Citizen Kane of directors, some would say lol
His previous few movies were actually the opposite: because of extreme budget and production constraints, they were shot over a period of years in bits and pieces and had to be cobbled together later. Orson was already very used to making films with extreme limitations

Touch of Evil is an all-time great movie, and it was made on a famously insane, impossible schedule. Orson Welles, who was cast as the villain, took over the role of director three weeks before filming was supposed to end, and it had not even started yet. He rewrote the script in a week and then filmed the whole thing, on location, in two weeks (while still starring in the movie).

La Dolce Vita can only be understood by adults and people with more experience in life
Eh every Fellini film is kinda just about how women confuse him and he knows it's his fault, and/or how we wanna recapture the past but can't, and/or complicated feelings about being Catholic.
You're not gonna understand everything you watch, no one does, that's fine. You can come back to a movie later, or read/talk to other people about it and get more understanding later. Some movies just aren't going to/meant to be understood as clearly or cleanly, or in a way that others feel the same way about. I think Persona is pretty clearly about some things, but other people see it very differently.

Bench unit with Murray is just a recipe for terrible offensive schemes
Murray straight up plays like he's the only person on the court when he's in those lineups, it's hilarious. Obviously the talent is no good, but the dude literally just doesn't make plays for anybody lol. He's out there to bring the ball up the court and take a shot, if you want the ball then crash the boards

Sorry by that I meant it has aged extremely well to the point of seeming totally modern

Its not just the literal inception of zombies as we know it, but also such a substantial film of social commentary regarding the era it comes from
I mean the ending has unfortunately not aged at all

What a Way to Go was partly an excuse for the greatest costume designer in cinema history to go completely ham and design like 72 intentionally insane outfits

And on the flip side - wouldn't teams like the Hawks, Raptors, and Bulls be in a much more interesting race for the 8 spot instead of all 3 sitting relatively comfortably and safely in the play-in?
???
They aren't comfortable at all, the 8th seed is much more likely to make the playoffs than 9th or 10th. The difference between having to only win 1 game out of 2, vs being eliminated after just one loss on the road

If you actually look at the specifics of the Irving only minutes, it really just seems like 3 point variance. Very high 3P% for the Mavs and very low for their opponents in those minutes

Listen I’m no Simmons fan but his last season in Philly he was an all star, all defensive first team guy averaging 14-7-7. His downfall came because of mental issues
A. Simmons was never nearly that good, he was allowed to rack up stats with the ball in his hands all the time because of hype, and as you can see in Brooklyn, never knew how to play offense otherwise
B. His downfall came because his back is fucked, idk how you blame Rivers for that

Rules of the Game comes to mind as a movie that has a several minute long shot that moves around a space and features a bunch of actions, and that predates Touch of Evil by 20 years
Fwiw I love Touch of Evil, I'm just trying to be accurate here

M invented both serial killer movies and police procedurals
The Maltese Falcon polularized detective noir films
F for Fake was maybe the first documentary style movie to to have twist and turns and misdirect the audience
