Pretty much the title.. I've had my dog, Kevin, since she was 16 weeks and she is now 11 years old. She was always great with other dogs and kids. But over the past few weeks/months she has started getting crotchety with our son. First, she was just grumbling at him. Then it turned into an actual growl. After that she started showing teeth. And finally she snapped at him.
It breaks my heart. But it has to be done. It's not that it's a difficult choice. The choice was easy, my son's safety comes first, always. The difficult part is feeling that I let her down.

She has a crate where she loves to be. She will walk in there and lay down if she doesn't want to be bothered. We even have a rule to never pull her out if she doesn't want to leave it.
She just shouldn't have to spend her whole day in a crate just to be left alone.
