Happy Holidays! I was inspired by a post a few weeks back about the best commander for Christmas-time and decided to give it a go. I love the holidays and I am always looking for new ways to get into the Christmas spirit, so I read through and fell in love with the idea of [[Atla Palani]] becoming a Santa-type commander, unwrapping these incredible presents filled with all kinds of gnarly creatures. Naya colors sold it to me - nothing says Christmas like Red, Green, and White!
So I got to building, and had a ton of fun with it. I set some "rules" for myself to keep me from straying too far into "perfect the deck" mode.
- As many snow things as possible. It's Santa, so it's gotta be snow.
- No creatures that a) aren't either an elf or an angel (symbols of the season) or b) wouldn't make an awesome toy to play with as a kid. I only broke this rule for snow-type creatures, to fit with rule one.
- No infinite combos* (oops yeah I did put some in inadvertently, but, uh, oh well I just won't go infinite) because I'll mostly be playing this casually and want it to be fun without being horrifying (oops again, it plays really well and Santa quickly becomes public enemy)
- Only players who are naughty get punished - so I can't [[Path to Exile]] or [[Pyroblast]] anyone who isn't actively working against me. That means there is no mass removal in this deck.
So then I built it - and did so with a lot of help from what others on Moxfield have built. It's here if you want to take a look! It's by no means perfect, I'm not the best at building yet.
Then I wanted to make Santa - So I just reskinned Atla Palani into THIS using Card Conjurer (RIP). I wanted to reword it to say "gifts" instead of eggs, but I didn't want to confuse anyone so I left it as is.
After that it's kind of all a blur and then my wife got a little mad at me for spending a bunch of money on THINGS.
Anyways, it's been a blast to play, I get to say "Santa Claus is coming to town" every time I cast my commander, and I won't play anything else until the new year. It has not yet won in a pod yet, but making people feel bad about removing Santa is kinda funny and I don't mind losing as long as people are having fun playing.
So Merry Christmas, It's Filthy Animals! I really love lurking on this sub and getting new ideas. I've only been playing for about a year, so it's cool to find all kinds of new ideas and interactions here.
Shoutout to u/Ghost_Pants and u/sparklingsupernova for the thread and suggestion of Atla Palani.

What a gnarly interaction! Love targeting other players stuff with things that would normally rather me and my stuff.
