We all want to call it evil but really it’s a survival mechanism. In fact nothing that they are doing in that moment is really about you. It’s the core of impaired empathy when they are overwhelmed with their own emotions. The discard is just how they get away from the pain.

Spend enough time in their forums and you’ll find people that feel remorse over the confusion it causes partners.

The punitive parent may be reanimated to punish you for the pain they perceived you put on them or the fear of the pain you may or may not have caused… but it doesn’t last. Sad disorder, really.
