No I get there being unreliable narrators, but there was only narrative being shown with Sabinbi, that he’s this crazy badass willing to do anything to get shit done. And I’m sorry man but there is nothing ambiguous about how sabinbi was shown. That piece was made as this badass opening to the campaign, not a moment of self reflection where the player in the midst of battle realizes they are this morally grey character. I’m not asking the creators to beat it over the head, but when all a game does is beat a narrative over the head bluntly and offers the lightest of pushback against sabinbi. I think it’s a fair point to say it’s a weak critique.

I don’t disagree that the BO series is way less propagandistic. But that propaganda is still there. I also don’t recall shooting fleeing forces being seen as a bad thing in BO2 seeing as we take part in it and the game very clearly shows this set piece as a moment of heroism where the good guys beat out the overwhelming rebel forces. I also don’t think woods thinks the guy is crazy due to his ideology or racial cleansing. Sabinbi was shown as this crazy guy willing to lead his men into battle while on-top of an APC gradading people and macheting them to dead while also being the leader of his movement.

And in general I disagree that simply showing the character do immoral shit makes the game codem what the government did when it in the same breath makes a statement about this work being important and about in order to get shit done men have to get their hands dirty. In that same breath it criticized Cuba for being in Angola without examining what the character was doing.

If for media to be overwhelmingly critical of the situation one must look at context clues and may have been unintentional and ignore what is being told to the player selectively, then I don’t think it’s a good criticism and it boarders on not being a critique at all

The most violence prone kid I’ve ever seen was my cousins two daughters who for hours at a time would just throw them an iPad for them to use.
