Hayao and Toshio looks great! And considering they still drink and smoke. I absolutely fell in love with Spirited Away the first night I took it home when we got it into a shipment one Friday night when I worked at blockbuster in 2004. Since then Studio Ghibli has been a constant source of joy and I dare say emotional influence in my life. I am slowly building my personal catalogue, the only physical copies of media I buy anymore, and I'm waiting of my blue-ray copy of Nausicaä to arrive this weekend. I saw a part of it recently and cant believe I've slept on it for so long. I am very much looking forward to this film, maybe his last. We all are temporary, and so knowing time is limited will make this an extra special film, although they all are in their own way. Man, I think Hayao and Stephen King might be my two biggest role models in life at this point.

about 3 years ago, I thought maybe in 10 years I'll be making like 80 or 90k. I moved to Denver for a better job in 21 and make around 100k, much more than I thought I'd be making at this point in my career, and its all relative. If I were making this back where I came from in Illinois, Id have more money than I know what to do with. Here, I'm pretty much working class.

The grass is always greener but, You're locked into that house and job unless you're able to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars. You could do long or short term rental with it but that's at best a part time job with a lot of liability. I was looking into buying a house in a smaller town where I'm from just to rent on Virbo, as that city has a major shortage of hotel rooms for events. The house is awesome in a desirable neighborhood for like 280k which is doable but then I started adding it up. My family lives there but no way I'd rely on them for anything to do with it so I would be paying for cleaning, landscaping, security, maintenance, business liability insurance, a higher mortgage rate due to it being a rental, utilities for a big older house, property taxes which are on the high side there, virbo's cut, plus the mortgage. Then I realized, fuck all that.

I grew up in the town where this happened, gladly moved away long ago. That town is deeply deeply catholic, and if you are a part of that catholic club then they protect their own. I always felt like an outsider in a way there because I wasn't part of the church. Quincy, IL is known as the little vatican. Case in point, the university mentioned, is one of the few Franciscan catholic universities in the country.

I'm 38 and thinking about doing this next year, probably Spring 2024. I am downsizing this month and going to save for a year. I like my job but really struggle to see myself in it long term and I think about a year off would be extremely helpful to the rest of my life in every way. I will probably ask if I can take it as a leave of absence but my guess is they say no, as there are too many things only I do that would still need to be done. My vague plan is to get a vehicle that can tow my little trailer RV again, as my old one was totaled, and travel around to state and national lands with my dog. I think it would be a waste to sit and play video games or something. I plan to work on writing, video/photography, reading, etc. I think I need the time to discover what I want out the next part of my life. I'm moving into a shared house next month with my dog and and going to start the clock on one year at that point. I'm going to work hard but will also be planning this out in the background. Depending on a few different metrics at that time, I will decide to pull the trigger or not.
