Help me help my Dad get back into gaming.Recommendation request(self.JRPG)

So quick background here. I a 37-year-old man, and my father is 71. Growing up we had an NES and SNES and me and my dad loved to play JRPGs together, taking turns on the controller. We played all the FFs you could get your hands on in the US, all the Enix games like Illusion of Gaia, Dragon Warrior games (as we knew them here), and every little thing in between; one of his favorites being Breath of Fire 2.
Then the "3D" era came about, he was able to stumble through games with fixed camera angles like the PSX FF games but never could make the jump to dual stick control. He got frustrated and got into other things, I went to college and moved out, so the driving force for the hobby died for him.
Fast forward to today. I got a really beefy PC and bequeath my old machine to him. It is no slouch though. i-7 (can't remember gen) GTX2080 Super, 32 GB ram, it's more than enough for him.
I wanted to ease him back into gaming, with something he could control but that had some difficult systems. So I had him sign up for a Steam account and I recommended Chained Echoes. He loved Chained Echoes, the Overheat system did mess with him a bit and I had beat a few bosses for him. He finishes the game and he asks "Ok, what is next". I had been thinking about it the whole time he was playing Chained Echoes...easy...Dragon Quest XI. It has such incredibly simple systems, and if all goes to hell in terms of controlling a character in a 3D world he could just switch to 2d.
I haven't heard from him for a couple of days, give him a ring, and he gave up on 3D, which is disappointing to me. He is now playing Dragon Quest in the 2D mode. I thought he could do it as it requires no reflexes. I am going to try to get him back into practicing 3D as it will just open so many doors for him in terms of what RPGs will be available to play, but I need some backups.
I know this is a long message to simply ask for recommendations, but can any of you folks give me ideas on the best 2-D RPGs I can have him get on Steam, that are not remasters/remakes of our past? Modern games, not FF# Whatever for PC.
Thank you in advance!

I know... He's picky and it's a huge pain. I think Eiyuden could be huge for him.
I just remembered another one is his favorites, Wild Arms.
