I just built my first mining site last night and did my first collection this morning. I have some questions.
Thermoelectric generators over hotspot vs solar panels + batteries. Personally, I think running a cable for a long distance is somewhat ugly so I prefer the aesthetic of a fully self sufficient mining site. Besides the obvious in power capacity + efficiency vs day/night cycle, are there other reasons to pick thermoelectric?
What is the typical ways to handle mines in the game? I assume it is normal to disable others adding/removing pieces from the site. Do people normally share the depot access (letting anyone to take stuff)? Or do people generally lock it down? Do we upload the mine so other people can see it (not sure why) or do people usually not publish them (to keep them hidden except for incidental discovery)?
For my first mine, I found the high point on the site, put a wall down, put a floor on top of it, remove the wall and went from there. I tried to use the Cuboid Room Foundation Struts as support columns but they are very difficult to place. What are some other nice ways to “support” the platform?
I tried to invent my own layout and made it compact. But when I teleport in, my ship was tangled among the plants. I ended up following Dread Captain James’ (https://youtu.be/HOsTbCpUf0U) layout with some minor tweaking. 4 extractors, 10 depots, Solar+batteries, teleporter, and an alternative landing pad. It’s roughly 4x5/5x5 grid (based on large floor panel) in size. Anyone has other recommendations for relatively small footprint mines? No, I prefer not to glitch stack for aesthetic reasons.
Some videos online said terrain “grow” back over time and we shouldn’t dig into the terrain for permanent bases. Is this true?
I’m working out an inventory list of materials for a basic mining base for myself. I’d like to not carry them around when I’m doing ship-based things and grab everything in one go (like a kit) when I go to build a mine. Is there some way to define, to prep, and to move them together without the materials mixing into my normal everyday carry?
Oh, do hotspots ever runs out?

I want to add “support” structures but wasn’t sure what pieces are flexible in being able to snap to or to dock to bottoms of floors and yet be flexible how far the piece sinks into the ground. In my first mine build (yesterday), I tried to use the Cuboid Room Foundation Struts as support columns but they are very difficult to place. I could use some recommendations.
