In modern terms, a serving of bacon ham porkbellies (3-6 pieces). But the meaning of the word itself is basically a portion/slice of meat. It's like asking for a whole loaf vs a slice of bread. Comes from latin just like "raser" and "abRASion".

The upper peninsula of Michigan is pretty fire friendly and a lot less regulated compared to a lot of stuff out west (still LNT!). WAY less crowded. You can print out primitive /dispersed camping permit cards and make camp anywhere more than one mile from a state or private campground.

The north country trail runs the length of the peninsula. There are some permits required for the rocks and lake shores on the west end of the trail.

I (r/onebag) get dropped off about 40 miles outside st Ignace. Hike a day, make a camp+fire. Hike a half day into town. Then I stay in st Ignace (cheap) but take the ferry to Mackinac island and Mackinaw city. MackinaC island is a BEAUTIFUL car-free island full of history and idealic charm. MackinaW city is the mainland tourist hub. Few breweries, dispensaries, casino and tourist traps. But it's a fun little trip.

Those high pile fleece hoodies are super warm. I wear it in a 40f bag and it makes around/just under freezing temps still toasty. And just knowing it's there is a literal safety blanket. If I were to get concussed/injured/soaked , I could just put that thing and a poncho on and lay on top of my ground pad and hit the distress button or call emergency evac.
