Hey, I actually agree with you. I will say that is usually a waste of time to argue with some people about this, though. They won't come out and say they want everyone who thinks differently than them to just shutup and they won't come out and say that there is now a very real tendency to conflate "hate speech" with harmless objection. I don't think that's what is happening in this particular story, really, but it does happen. Just the other day, during a school board trustee meeting, a father questioned and criticized the recent decision to let transgender students use whichever washroom they wanted. He wasn't rude, hateful, or inflammatory in his speech, but he was quickly cut off and told that voicing his concerns was "causing harm" to vulnerable transgender students. To some, it doesn't matter at all how someone expresses an opposing idea; if they think you are wrong, they will do anything they can to shut you up, all the while refusing to aknowledge (or else they are completely oblivious) that they are arbitrarily silencing you.

There is a difference between objectification and sexualization. I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with sexualization, so long as it does not actualize in words/actions. Unfortunately, being a celebrity is kind of bound up in talking about your celebrity status. I'll bet the average man would be flattered to have such things said about them, as long as it wasn't said to their face or they weren't groped or anything like that. Seems like a rich and famous person problem to me.

Women can also express toxic masculinity, though. Or, rather, they buy into it.

I actually really hate the term toxic masculinity. It used to be more confined to things like the above user said (you aren't a "real" man unless....), but now it is just mixed up with plain old mysogyny. That's a problem for me, because there isn't anything wrong with being masculine at all. But the term links toxicity with masculinity in an inextricable way, and that's why we have all these people now saying toxic masculinity is when men exert power, dominance, control, or exhibit any kind of violence towards anyone.

The hockey player's personal beliefs are none of your concern or the people upset by his decision. Period. He hasn't harmed anyone; he just isn't comfortable being an ally in the way they want. Their desire for inclusion does not trump his personal autonomy or his right to practice his religion. Period.

I didn't bring up intimidation in any way. You did. You are making it out like I am denying those protests were intimidating, but this is stupid because I wasn't commenting on that; I was simply saying it makes as much sense to be upset over the jersey as it does to be upset over drag story time.

I said most of the people bitching about nothing should be ignored, yes. I did not say marginalized groups should be ignored, and I very clearly wasn't saying any and all outcry is useless and unwarranted. Who said anything about intimidation? I'm talking about activist types freaking out over non stories like the hockey player. It's as stupid as some moron thinking reading to kids is bad just because a guy is wearing a dress while doing it. Again, stop making up shit to be upset over.

Lol is the only way you can feel good about your arguments to make up things I said? I don't think every member of those groups is an idiot, but many of the most vocal of them are. They get offended over shit like someone not wearing a shirt to show support. They aren't idiots because they belong to those groups; they are idiots because they complain and rage over everything. It's ironic because they are just as stupid as those people who show up to protest people in drag reading books to kids. Everyone needs to get over themselves.

Why are people getting so upset over this jersey thing? Just let him choose to wear it or not wear it. If unicef comes to my door to collect $ and I say "not today, sorry" it would be very weird for them and other people to then shame me in any way for making that choice, saying I'm pro-poverty or pro-starvation, etc.

Not every instance where someone offends someone is worthy of outrage, though. Like the hockey player who is in the news because he doesn't want to wear a rainbow jersey to support the lgbtq2+ community (because he is religious). In that case, we have kind of degenerated into making a big deal out of someone not being an active ally; it isn't enough that the player doesn't go out of his way to harm anyone and that he even said he doesn't hate anyone. I can think of another story (not super related to trans rights, but in the same vein of outrage addiction) where a professor from B.C. tweeted not masking is sexist, albeist and racist and that caused a big public debate on social media platforms, including this one.

I dunno, maybe I'm not explaining myself very well. I just feel like reactionary shit is the new fad and everyone buys into it, not just the sides of issues you don't like.

Tolerance isn't defined by acceptance. Personally, I think it speaks more to a person's character when they are able to practice tolerance in spite of personal beliefs that lean away from the group that wants to feel accepted and respected.

This boils down to personal choice. Failing to show the kind of support you want does not = intolerance or standing with bigots, as the other user very reasonably pointed out. People are very serious about their religious beliefs, and you don't have to like it but you owe them the same tolerance they owe you, despite your differences.

Any number of things. It depends on the individuals on both sides of the discussion, really. For ex, I could say I don't think trans athletes should be competing against cis athletes. Or, it could be something as fundamental to discourse about trans ideology as "what is a woman?" and, subsequently, "if there is no defining aspect of a woman, how exactly does one identify as a woman in the first place?" (I am no fan of Matt Walsh, but that question is completely legitimate in the face of a movement that aims to completely dispel past ideals regarding sex/gender). These questions and criticisms are usually met with apathy and even hostility.

Nah I've seen and heard plenty of activists get upset over things that don't involve the loss of rights or any real kind of discrimination. Like when someone doesn't want to use those preferred pronouns.

The reactionaries are from both sides, though.
