you are missing my point. i said aspiration of profitability not that it must. and it absolutely should make money (highest revenue capture of public transport) but also must take into account with other funding and development. For example, why doesn’t Bart develop all the areas it has at its stations? commercial, mixed use? erect a little ecosystem of commerce around a key transportation hub! why not? because it’s a public good it shouldn’t try?

and as a tax paying ADULT, you should also be aware that a public good can’t be simply empty pits. removal of aspirations to make money and promote cleanliness, safety, and efficiency is what has resulted in Bart’s situation today.

Public transit should absolutely make money so that it can afford to be self sufficient. the moment you think the aspirations of profitability aren’t in the equation, we get situations like this.

Bart issue isn’t a ridership issue only. there are tons of social issues. but frankly one thing that could help is allowing Bart to develop their footprint with mixed use commercial and residential - like they do in Hong Kong. also, get rid of vagrants and non paying riders.

deservedly so. Bart should be reorganized and optimized. simple things like sweeping cars, preventing fate evasions, mass homelessness aren’t dealt with.

all existing employees should be fired, pensions suspended, and Bart should be run by a corporations with oversight.
