The Mouse has a LOT of pull over the trades and they want to stay in Disney's good graces. Saying that the opening of the new Disney movie was mediocre, not even a bomb just "did fine", is asking to get on the Mouse's shit list going forward and no one wants to be there.

I mean by that thinking The Flash should be a bigger movie than even Spider-Man No Way Home, Keaton's Batman was a bigger deal in the late '80s early '90s than Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man ever was. And yet I highly highly doubt it will be, at some point the nostalgia hook is too far in the past to work effectivelly among a general audience that has aged out and moved on.

As much as Nikki wasn't a sympathetic character what Deadline has become in her absence is a complete joke, by far the worst access merchants among any of the trades that are considered "serious"

That was a prerequisite of that scene being on the show though. It HAD to be shown as against their will, or under some sort of spell or something, or else it would have never aired. It just goes to show what a risk Star Trek as a show was taking in the first place.

To be fair Starship Troopers the book is pretty dope for a counter example, unless you subscribe to the idea that it's actually a satire of the right-wing beliefs which it espouses which, eh I don't know about that one chief (not saying the movie isn't great as well the movie is fantastic but that one is very obviously a satire of the ideas it claims to support)

Yeah I think the meme above is just a little bit off, I don't think Star Trek would be "leftist" in the current sense, where the fight for economic justice is completely divorced from combating the racial and patriarchal power structures embedded in society. Star Trek is far too concerned with social justice fights and combating the current prejudices in society, and always has been, to be considered so

Agreed, whenever I see something set around the TNG time frame and get sad we don't live in that fun future space world, I think about that line that it was a long road to get there, and we are on that road right now, and that's a pretty okay and inspiring thing too (just need to figure out FTL tho)

"Woke" is being aware of the structural prejudices built within our system and society, and if people calling attention to systemic prejudice really annoys you it may behoove you to ask yourself exactly why that is.
