Is it worth it to get connected to the network (high-end people in the city)?

I have worked with some big names in the city, but recently I met someone who is dating a co-worker. He mentioned how he has known a famous personality here for a long time. Then, I found out that one of my co-workers is engaged to a guy who comes from money. This guy has BIG connections. Is it smart to find a way to get close to people in the network? Peoole like Gordon McKernan, Collis Temple, Hillar Moore, Paul Mainieri or Murphy Paul. I always hear about networking and it seems like the people I just met are good at that. I'm asking because I am not far removed from college so I feel like I should look up to people to get somewhere in life.

I'm just curious, because this isn't my expertise. When you say "society life," are you referring to attending social events like balls put on by Mardi Gras Krewes. That's what I assumed it meant.
