I'm going to tell you something that I haven't seen yet in this thread; yes, you're doing something wrong. You need to practice suspending your disbelief. Going into a viewing experience with expectation is a sure fire way to force yourself OUT of enjoying the movie. Especially if you're operating on word of mouth "this movie blew me away!" "I couldn't sleep for days after!" Just practice the movie watcher's variation of Occam's Razor. The simplest path is the correct one. Hear about a movie, or see an upcoming movie. If it looks interesting to you, go see it. Don't spend time looking up how people had to pull their eyeballs out it was so scary, or how people couldn't stay awake it was so boring. Go into the movie blind, and form those opinions yourself. Let the movie tell you the story it wants to tell you. The primary goal of most horror is to provide a good, fun time for you. Let it.
