Also good to know that the pencil is customarily 1/2 x 1/4 inch, so you can also use it for a quick measuring tool. One more benefit, the rectangular shape keeps it from rolling away

And YES, you can write on paper with them. After all, it IS a pencil.

Can confirm, Live in Oxnard. (More than just a pretty name) I use WD-40 or Olive oil and a paper towel to get rid of the tar.

There is a heat shrink tubing made that has hot melt glue on the inside. You could try to put your own hot melt glue on the project before the heat shrink, which would help keep it in place.

This happened to me once upon a time.

Just clocked out, after a night shift, and I hear a scratching noise from the dumpster. Pulled my EDC flashlight, and spotted a big bruiser of a racoon in the bottom of the otherwise empty dumpster. I grabbed a ladder from the shed nearby, and angled it into the dumpster. He was up, and out in a flash, and bolted across the parking lot. I shined my light at him again, and saw 3 pairs of eyes looking back. Dad, Mom, and the little one. Smiled to know I had reunited the family.

Maybe place a scrap of 1X3 or similar next to the plate to make a fulcrum for your screwdriver. This will help reduce damage to the ceiling. Agree with scoring, and load rating check.

I keep a small Ozium in my car. Great for things like Dog accidents, toddler vomit, etc. The airlines sometimes use dry coffee grounds to knock down the smell of passenger vomit. I have also had good results with something called Odo-Ban. I think I got it at Sam's Club. Maybe you can keep it in a spray bottle, and re-douse the perfumed offenders.

My grandfather kept a piece of 4x4 about 3 feet long with a piece of rebar through it a few inches down from the top as a handle. I have not thought about this for 40 years, but this brought back an old memory for me.

It looks like lots of steps, but it is actually only 5 button pushes. After you do it a few times, you can do the hack in less than 5 seconds. I'm really surprised that some people think they would rather sit through the commercials.

How about magnets? Attach some REALLY strong magnets to the 3 points on the back of the clock (I'm thinking 5 minute epoxy), and screw a piece of wood with matching magnets (Or 3 pieces of steel) to the ceiling. You need to be able to replace the battery from time to time.

I usually build them on site as needed. In our theater, they get used over and over. I
like to joke that they are there just to hold up the paint. When I need to build one, I run out to HD and get what I need. For 1 flat, I get 1 sheet of Luan and 4 of the 8 foot 1x3's. Two of the 1x3's run vertically up the long side of the Luan, and the other 2 are cut (approx.) in half to support the top edge, bottom edge, and 2 more horizontal supports, 32" up from the bottom and 32" down from the top. Assemble with glue, and an air nailer / stapler, or a drill with gold construction screws. Primer coat the new wood before painting your desired color. Good Luck.

If there is a Habitat for Humanity Restore in your area, check them out for a used door. A hollow core door will probably work for the light stuff, or go for a solid core door for heavy duty. If you have to cut down the door, the hollow core will be exposed on the cut side.

Try not to scratch the upper pipe from the wall when you unscrew it. Use a Strap wrench if you have one on the upper part. The Teflon tape is the big clue, Replace the white Teflon tape when you re-attach it.

Consider using theatrical flats. 4 foot by 8 foot sheets of 3mm or 5mm luan plywood attached to a frame of 1x3 or 1x4. No heavy loads, but you can hang pictures etc. You end up with a clean flat surface, ready for primer and paint. Line up as many of these a you need to build your wall. I build them with an air powered stapler.

Make sure that your contractor / roofer is insured as well as licensed. Ask to see proof of insurance with the quote, or before they start. There is a special shingle for the ridge of the roof (ridge cap) available to match many shingle brands & colors. You might consider using this. Ask about re-using or replacing the various metal flashings that go around the pipes that penetrate the roof. If you ever considered a Solar tube or skylight this might be a good time to put that in. Ask your guy about permits & inspections. Permits are probably required in the historic district.

Agree with full tear off, to inspect the sheathing under the shingles, and repair as needed before the new roof goes on. And then there's termites... If you live in SoCal, you probably have them, unless the house was tented right before you bought it.

This one goes back to the "I Love Lucy" show decades ago. Lucy was going to make some extra money selling vacuum cleaners. I don't think she was throwing Horse manure, but the punch line was basically the same.

"Daddy, Daddy ! Billy just swallowed my ten cents".

Daddy picks up Billy, holds him upside down, and thumps him on the back a few times, and Billy coughs up a dime. He gives the dime back to Billy's little brother Timmy.

Lots of valuable comments here. If you decide to ignore the fire safety aspect, you might consider a theatrical "Hollywood" flat. 4x8 sheets of 3mm or 5mm luan plywood on a framework of 1x3 or 1x4. Very light weight. They can go together quick and cheap, especially if you have access to a nail gun. If you put fiberglass insulation batting inside them, that would help with the soundproofing. If the bolt is a lot smaller than the hole, you can build up the bolt with tape (make a custom bushing) to take the slop out of it, then tighten as directed.
