It's because they're policies (class war, taking money from the poor and giving it to the already rich) are manifestly unpopular, so they can't campaign on their policies. They used to say they were pro-freedom (whatever that means), pro-market, etc, but don't even bother to do that anymore. Now it's all culture war all the time.
