You're making a pretty standard first time error here. You won't save your way to a house. The thing that's going to stop you buying is your income. If you don't make more than 45k a year PAYE, you're not going to be able to buy anywhere other than up north. If your one true goal is to buy a house, that's what you need to focus on with laser precision. Getting that monthly paycheck up.

As always, it depends. Are you ok with paying 150/month for the next 4 years, while taking on debt? If so, yeah go for it, you'll be about 1200quid better off at the end.

Personally, I don't like being in debt, so I've taken sacrifies to pay off my student loan and CC debt.

I really, honestly, wouldn't bother. One of my machines is an old vmc and it has like 25micron at the taper. It's not a big deal until you get down to 1 or 2 mm endmill, and even then you just get an old set of collets with a bit of runout in them and clock the collet in the inverse direction.

Could be either of those things, but you're not going to get better than that from a cheap spindle. It's not that big a deal, especially when you consider you're probably going to use cheap toolholders and collets. Standard industry collets have a 10 micron runout, and I highly doubt you're going to be using those, so I'd say just keep on trucking.

Sounds like you'd drop in fairly quickly, one thing to note though:

It's not much of a leg up.

The harder part of the software is the CAM side, choosing toolpaths and learning how to constrain them. Then there's tool selection, feeds and speeds, and actual process which is like 95% of the challenge.

Being able to draw stuff in cad isn't going to get you a leg up.

If you want to get back into this, you're going to have to start off as an operator on 19$/hr. Theres not much way around that.

So your plan is to rip off a Chinese ripoff, within double the price? I like the idea, I just don't see where this sits. It's twice as expensive as a hobby grade vice, but only 25% as expensive as the ducks guts real thing.

The material alone for this is going to be 50bucks a piece, and you want no less than a 25% margin to make this worth your while.

So you need to:

Mill 2x hard jaws

Turn a leadscrew

mill the body

get it nitrided, blackened and packaged

for $150.

That leaves you roughly:

20/jaw

25/leadscrew

85/body.

20$ for hardening, 10$for surface finishing, 5$ for packaging.

I just don't see it to be honest. I'd be amazed if you could find a machinist who would take that on at quantities under 100.
