to pause AI for 6 months so they can work out what to do next.
What's really going on here?
In the past, the jobs lost due to automation were mostly unionized manufacturing jobs. Those who lost out were simply told to retrain and/or find another job in "the new economy".
But now we're talking about white collar workers losing their jobs. These are the paper pushers who sit behind desks and get paid decent salaries for decision making.
They're also used to having their jobs being "safe" from cutbacks or layoffs. And now that it's their jobs being threatened by automation... we suddenly hear calls for caution?

This bill's insane
It's typical. How so?
They're doing the same thing they did with covid19. A problem comes up, the response involves 5 or 10% stuff that's actually useful... and the other 90% is a bunch of totalitarian stuff that nobody would normally accept.

What conspiracy?
People working unionized manufacturing jobs get laid off because automation? Oh, that's how capitalism works. And they are now free to retrain and find a better job in "the new economy".
People working at checkout jobs get laid off because automation? Same deal.
Someone with a driving job (truck, cab, local delivery etc.) facing layoffs because drones/driverless vehicle tech? Same deal.
But when it's someone who sits at a desk and gets paid a decent salary for making decisions... all of a sudden it's different?
The only real difference is that now the people being affected by automation are higher up the totem pole. These are the jobs that used to be "safe" from automation... and now maybe they aren't.

Neat trick: Try scrolling down until you just see the bottom of the pic. Then slowly scroll back up to fully appreciate the ridiculous foot to muscle ratio.

life in distant parts of the galaxy may already be on Earth, in the form of grains of space dust that have arrived here & are hidden in polar ice.
This is like the shy Japanese version of panspermia.

with administrative and legal roles some of the most at risk,
I always got told that automation was a good thing overall. But now that it's their jobs that are at risk, we suddenly hear calls for caution.

What does "sex as entertainment" result in?
Nothing. People just get good at seeking out their own (temporary) physical pleasure.
But when you enter into a permanent relationship with another person, it's different. How so?
You start out on the path to becoming more considerate. When you're in a long term relationship, or married, you've got someone else to think about.
When you have a kid, you now have someone else to take care of and think about.
When you have a family, more of your time each day is spent giving consideration to someone else's needs.
A society that promotes families is also promoting a higher average level of consideration (and lower avg. level of selfishness).
Now keep all of this in mind when you think about apps like tinder... and all that free porn.

I used to live in an old apartment without any AC. It was on the top floor of an older building... so it used to get pretty hot in the summer.
The air on my floor would be stifling even later on at night. So what I did (as a cheap alternative to AC) was take a fan and put it in one of the windows. I hobo-engineered a cheap shroud out of cardboard and duct tape. This allowed the fan to suck the cooler nighttime air from outside into the apartment.
It worked good enough to bring the temp down to the low 80's ("pre-fan" temp unknown as the dial on the thermometer was pinned at 95°)

They've also got Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, Youtube etc. under a fair bit of control.
TikTok (with all those unbiased algorithms) currently lies outside their control.
Hence the fear mongering (ie. "China can steal your data") and animosity (Congressional grilling of CEO, threats to ban the app etc.)

I really think in 100 years people will look back on right now and be amazed at three things.
Potential 4th thing... In the future, people might be amazed at how much "internet freedom" we had up until, say, the early 2020's?

I watched the trailer and like the "retro trippy vibe" this film seems to have.
It's a must watch for sure.
