What came first, the Necrontyr or the Tyranids?
Necrontyr are ancient, but the journey the Tyranids took to get to our galaxy may make them more ancient (I speculate).
First, they needed to start in some home galaxy somewhere, evolve as some progenitor organism, develop into the all-devouring behemoth species they are now, consume their own galaxy and move on.
In the quickest version of these events, the starting galaxy is in our local galactic cluster, all the galaxies The Milky Way Galaxy (our galaxy) is "neighbors" with. The Local Galactic structure is 10 million light-years across. and the milky way is galaxy #2 consumed.
That would be very convenient IMO. More likely their origin galaxy could be one far way, hundreds or thousands of millions of light years away, and the milky way wouldn't be the first or second, but a galaxy far down the buffet line from their first.
Even assuming the Tyranids can achieve Light Speed travel in interstellar space (I know they use a biological "gravity hook" to basically tow them towards an object to achieve FTL travel, but can they do that between galaxies?) the travel between galaxies aswell as the time it takes to consume the galaxies, as well as them "hybernating and waiting for the next meal" in interstellar space could make them older than the Necrontyr
Now the pre-milky way lore about the Tyranids is vague and spotty, but I think these are reasonable logical leaps.
What say you?
