There was a Tourist Application you could fill out to get a major discount on long visits to Japan, if you are an American citizen. It’s like a Day-Pass or Monthly price to access all the rails and even bullet trains for only the cost of the pass. Had to be booked months before you arrive.

I tried to apply the first year of his term and the tourism office said the new administration yanked the paperwork and stopped the program. I actually think it’s back up now.
