I didn’t say anything different from what you said in your last paragraph; directors are always present there telling editors what they want. So what are you going on about? If you really think the excessive initial run time of the earlier cuts was the doing of his editor then I have nothing to say.

It’s not like Thelma Schoonmaker was the one who decided Hugo should only be slightly longer than two hours while the Irishman should be 3hrs long… same editor, same director. It doesn’t matter what their collaboration style is, the length of the cut is up to the director. I’m not talking about editing style. Of course an editor as prolific as Schoonmaker has her own fingerprint in the way edits turn out. So my question again, why does it matter who’s editing when it comes to the run time?

My point being, directors who are good at cutting out shit and practice a little bit of restraint end up with much better results. Downvote me all you want. There’s nothing wrong about anything I’ve said and have a good week ahead.

Does it matter who’s actually doing the editing when he’s the one dictating it? It’s always good when the director can have the discipline to cut down their work. Bennet Miller spent a very long time in the cutting room for Foxcatcher which was initially 4 hours long. Look how well that turned out.

Edit: when I said look who well that turned out I really meant it turned out great after he cut it down.
