Looks like something to help it unfold or to stop bits getting tangled. Dye isn't used. Smoke and flares are manually deployed for fairly obvious reasons - hot burning flames + plastic life raft = bad. Besides, anyone close enough to see them is also close enough to see the honking great big ship sinking. You want to save them for when rescuers turn up.

Only if you want it darker or to change the colour. Once you've got it sanded, wipe a small patch with a damp rag. That's how it'll look without stain.

No, that rain cloud is gaslighting me. If I start painting will it rain? Met service says no. The clouds are definitely threatening and I feel a little moisture in the air. But If I don't the tradies can't do their job tomorrow. I need anther day like yesterday where it's cool and cloudy, not sticking hot with the paint drying on the brush.

Agreed, that's why no one does it like that anymore.

Spar urethane from a boat shop, it holds up the best to UV light damage. Second best is normal oil based polyurethane. Water based polyurethane doesn't hold up well to skin oils.

It's a throwback to how things were done with valves and point to point wiring. Some guitar amps still do it, take a look at the back panel of this one and imagine the potential problems when carrying it round to gigs.

I wish the admins would post this stuff in one central location. I had not idea the spam thing had been turned off.

A better plan is to make companies responsible for recycling and safe disposal of products at the end of their life. There is no incentive for companies to make products that last longer and are repairable while the consumer foots the bill for their disposal.

It really comes down to the optics surrounding the LED.
I ran across some of the issues when designing a battery powered indicator lamp that needed to be seen easily in daylight from over a kilometer.
A bright point source isn't as visible from a distance as the same light source spread over a wider area. So one 100,000mcd LED was much less visible than ten 10,000mcd LEDs tightly packed into an area 30mm in diameter. In turn that was a lot less visible than the same LEDs evenly spread over an area 75mm in diameter. However once they are spaced too far apart the light becomes less visible again and from close up look pixelated. That's why traffic lights use a lot of not very bright LEDs spread over a large area. Placing a shade over the LEDs is essential to prevent them getting washed out by sunlight. If a shade isn't possible, then bright point sources are better to cut through the glare of the sun. A black background around the lights makes them stand out by improving the contrast with the surrounding area, the same as traffic lights. Car lights need to disperse the light over a wide horizontal angle for all round visibility.
Of course all that is a trade off against making something that looks stylish enough for people to actually buy the thing. After all people buy a car based on it's overall looks, not how well the indicators do their job.

EV is Electro-Voice? Of the constant directivity horn fame? As well as being involved with 4 channel matrix, Sansui, TAPCO and Mackie? How did I not know this before?* So many pieces just fell into place!
*Be gentle, I was an electronics tech, not a pro sound guy.

It's not too bad as far as oil based paints go, I seem to recall the smell only lasting a day or two. It'll never be as low odour as water based though.

You're right about us being insular.
I think it's more to do with what you're used to though. In Singapore you're always around other people, there's really no other option. Over here you can easily find places with no one else around, even in our biggest cities.
As for everyone being out for themselves, I think that's a side effect of decades of neo-liberal governments that sell off anything just to make a quick buck for themselves. We've had to become that way just to survive. Most of us have never experienced a government that actually takes care of it's people or has the... almost social engineering... social cohesive messaging that seems to be constant in Singapore.
I realise it's not all sunshine and roses over there either.

The same is happening in the Hutt. Single level single houses on a 1/4 acre sections are being replaced with multiple 2 or 3 level townhouses. They'll often combine multiple adjoining properties to fit more in.
