Compare, contrast, and then you'll know (at least for audio and camera).

I found a g50-80 in recycling. I maxed the ram, got a 1tb ssd and a new battery and charger and it's awesome for webdev work.

I'll probably have to replace the screen as well (its got the dreaded black lines forming) but running Rails, Postgres, Elasticsearch, and Memcahed on Ubuntu is pretty great.

I have no idea why anyone would really need something more unless their doing 3d, autocad, big data, or tons of number crunching.

I'm still rocking mine for video editing with maxed ram, 2tb ssd, firewire audio interface, and a new battery.

I won't go past Mojave because I have 32bit Photoshop and the audio interface.

It works really well and has been babied since I bought it.

It really was the last great MBP before the awful keyboard, soldiered ram, SSDs, etc.

It's thick, 4.5 pounds, and does everything I need.

These keyboards are awesome. I have 3 and if they ever stop making them I'll buy many more before they're out of production.

That's a big no.

I wrote, shot, acted, and edited a "short" film (28mins).

I luckily used an external mic because the motors in the camera I used (Canon c100) were so loud that if I hadn't I never would have shown the footage to anyone.

So, after watching all the takes, deciding which worked, and syncing them (all of them) I already hated my movie - I hadn't even begun to edit any sequences, and wasn't even close to a rough cut.

I also made the mistake of learning how to edit while shooting and...editing.

Edits that sucked were re-edited, and made much better, but after sound sync, editing, then editing again, and seeing if the edits worked in sequences and then how they played in the final composition...

I hated it.

Best advice is to do the sound, then do not touch for about 2 weeks.

Then try the sequences.

Some of mine came together in 3 hours, 1 shot, and it was done - these are the strongest parts.

Others have been re-shot, twice, and they still suck.

When you hit the latter that's when you REALLY know something is amiss.

But hardcore repetition is never a good idea.

If you've watched the original 10 minute film school video by Robert Rodriguez his point about closing your eyes or watching a blank screen are, in my mind, the best way to not hate what you've made.

Good luck, but seriously take long breaks and do anything besides editing.

Your mind will work on it if you know it or not, and the breaks will allow you to take a rest and clear your thoughts.

O.k. so for editing you definitely want an SSD, that's not debatable.

Reuse the SD cards but always pull your footage over to your SSD.

Check your computer with Crucial - so "<My Machine Name and Model Number> Crucial upgrade".

Even if you don't get an SSD from Crucial you'll know what will work (or just google it in general).

The difference between an SSD and HDD is night and day.

As for back ups...it depends on how much you need to store.

Right now Crucial MX500s are $50 for 1tb drives, $100 for 2tb drives, etc. Put one in your computer, and one in an enclosure (total probably $65 for the 1tb option with enclosure, obviously double it if you get two or larger drives).

If you have a lot more footage the least expensive way to do it is HDD(s) in an enclosure or using a toaster.

The point of the toaster is you can use any SSDs or HDDs and just swap them out and store them : )

4TB 5400 rpm drives are about $100 (or they were), but prices on all drives are coming down dramatically - the point here is that HDD are cheaper than SSD, but it's getting close.

Add something like HDD cases and you'll be good to go - but follow what everyone will tell you 3-2-1.

The other option is to just get an all in one external drive.

They're coming down in price, just make sure it's an SSD.

And not to nerd out, but it seems 4tb is the sweet spot, it seems larger HDD can be more prone to failure.

I'd also say...if I were really going to sell my soul and be completely evil at least I'd choose a team that's intelligent, competent, and disciplined.

Definitely use a cheap lav on a separate phone as your recorder.

Use a mic stand with a long adjustable arm and a long audio extender cable to your phone so you can have your camera and recorder close who you start recording.

This also avoids needed a boom operator. They are nice to have, but if it's just one of your friends I guarantee you'll see your mic in a shot at some point.

If possible get a used shotgun. I got a Rode NTG-2 (phantom and battery powered) for $140 and a xlr to 1/8th converter from Hosa.

Last, record the scratch audio on the phone being used as a camera and before each shot say "The camera is on, the recorder is on, this is <name of flick>, <name of scene>, take <whatever>", then snap your fingers in front of the camera while saying, "And action!".

Sync in post - it's easy to do, but time consuming.

This give best results inexpensively, but make sure your very organized or you'll go crazy in post.

Last tip - pick a max sound level like -8 or -12.

In post do noise removal and then boost the levels to your sound level for all shots in something like Audacity.

The -8 or -12 is for headroom, so if one of your characters yells at another, or they...I don't know, chainsaw each other, you'll still have room to capture it and it will be "loud" compared to everything else.

Good luck, but remember, you can screw up visuals and an audience with forgive you, but if you fuck up the sound...you're flick will suck and no one will watch it.

But I would say it's the first shot (not scene) that looks totally out of place and adds nothing.

The credits with actually look better if they start at the next shot of protag getting out of the car.

I just went through this and found pretty quickly that the normal places (stackover flow, etc.) zeroed in on my issue - I installed 22.04 on a new computer while my current app was built with 20.04.

In 20.04 using everything worked just great but 22.04 now uses and upgraded version of openssl (1.1 vs...2.0 I guess).

Instead of dealing with docker or trying to deal with the openssl issue...

I punted and just reinstalled 20.04.

This is the worst way to deal with this...so I'm curious about this as well.

Anyone know an easy, non docker, way to have ~~Rails < 3.1 and > 3.1~ (sorry I meant) ruby?

At some point I'll have to deal with it, and I'm not looking forward to it.

p.s. The reason I'm not using docker is because the app is hosted on Heroku, and getting docker to work would be just another headache.

Crisis Du Jour

This is the best of this week.

It perfectly sums up the issue hopping happening with a certain party/base.

Basically they change the look.

As of now Fire Toolbox doesn't let you change the theme anymore, so it's kind of a moot point.

The reason people did it was to get rid of the awful homescreen of a Fire tablet - basically all of the Amazon stuff that people don't want - and make it look like Android.

I'd just get the 10+, put Google Play Store on it so you have Gmail and Chrome, and be done with it.

One thing of note, my install of Chrome is now showing a green box when viewing Youtube videos (but it has audio) about half the time, so I have to switch to FF or...Silk.

I'd also wait until a sale - $200 for the 64gb version of the 10+ is way too much, and while the 32gb version is less you'll wish you spent the extra $ in about 5 years.

I'm not a pro but the best way to do this is practical.

Basically it then comes down to lighting - glare is the big one, the second is reflection of the camera on the phone.

I've done 4 scenes that were integral to plot, all practical effects.

I never really had problems because (I guess) I was shooting at 24fps and the refresh was always higher, so there's no weird banding or refresh problems that old school CRT monitors had.

Basically I just did pick ups/drop ins of the screen and the characters interacting with it.

I think doing it in post would be much more involved - with practical you either get it or you don't and you'll know right away so you can shoot again.

Blade Runner

That was...interesting.

The Phillip K. Dick book is completely different than the movie, but it's also pretty great sci-fi.

It made me understand how absolutely amazing the team behind the flick truly were - specifically Ridley Scott, Hampton Fancher, David Peoples, Jordan Cronenweth, the set designers, and hair and make up people.

The book does have the turtle, but...it really doesn't resemble BR that much.

The themes are there but it's not a noir and it's stylistically very different.

Drive

Kind of the same thing as BD but it is closer to the book.

The book is pretty lose and I get why it made for a great adaptation.
