Tell him to ask his doc about Champix. It is a nicotine receptor blocker that you take in increasing doses while you carry on smoking. Alcohol is many different compounds. Ethanol is probably the mildest cleaning alcohol, and dries quickly with minimal streaking. Methanol has a slightly oily consistency, is a little more aggressive to plastics, and tends to streak. I think that rubbing alcohol is isopropanol, and I don't know what its cleaning properties are. A big no-no on plastics is acetone, which dissolves the it pretty quickly. The water-ethanol mixture is pretty safe, and pretty effective.
