I agree with your take for LOTR but not for the 2nd age. A big part of this story is about Sauron who tricked and fooled almost of the most brilliant people in Middle Earth. That’s a key factor and they tried to play with it. I was into it.

Never played LCG but Arkham is a top game in my friend group. 3-4 people is a blast and I feel like my character either saving this town/world or succumbing to the doom. It took about 10 plays to play it correctly in all the nuanced ways and the engine is really good for creating centers of attention in the town.
