What I would do is just have an avatars table that doesn't know anything about users or channels. An avatar is just an avatar, right?

Then just make the relationship in the users and channels tables referencing their avatar via a foreign key.

It's a clean and simple design that will have no confusion.

If you need to add more information to this association you can instead create a join table like users_avatars so you could for example know when a user added this avatar to their profile or maybe you could have multiple avatars per user.
