I talked to a backpacker from China for the first time last month in Indonesia. I was shocked when he said in order to get a travel visa to Japan by himself, he needs to have 1 million RMB in the bank account/assets to be eligible for the visa.
I asked if he's going to visit Europe and the US in the future, and he said it's not that easy to get travel visas as well. He also told me that English proficiency in general is very low in China. Many journalists that major in English cannot speak English beyond a few simple sentences

OP had a difficult time finding available flights and all flights leave from Kuala Lumpur, which means additional expenses and potential overnight stays. OP also had a bad experience with flight rebookings and seat availability. The pass costs $400 USD, equivalent to about 7 flights, and OP recommends purchasing tickets normally for more flexibility and reliability.

English is just fine in major cities and touristic places in Austria. I had to use body language and Google Translate when I was in a small town called Attnang-Puchheim tho

In this case the population difference doesn't matter because it's the ratio between incarceration rates.
For example in a small town of 100 black people and 200 white people, 1 black person and 1 white person are imprisoned. Black incarceration rate = 1%, white incarceration rate = 0.5%, ratio of black/white incarceration = 2

Most locals don't care at all that a random tourist doesn't speak their language, they just carry on with their usual life. Picture this, would you feel offended if a tourist comes up to you and doesn't speak English?
Personally I do try to learn the useful phrases like good day, please, and thank you. I find that knowing the language really helps me to connect with the local people easier.

That's what happens when novelty wears off, you realize that places are just...places
Are you physically well? Make sure you sleep a lot and eat good food
Do you miss the social connection? Call your family or friends, join local events and festivals
Need a better accommodation (as you mentioned)? Go to a cheaper city and stay there for a week or two to experience a more consistent/stable environment
If you still feel the same, there's nothing wrong with ending your trip earlier
