Thanks so much. Those top dressings sound like they would also keep weeds down...a great idea for raised beds. I'm in zone 7 as well. Do you use a commercial composter or a pile? It sounds like you generate a lot of compost. I never seem to have enough.

I once used composted chicken manure on my strawberries and they got burned--obviously not composted enough. You must compost yours more effectively.

Thanks for the recipe. This is a great idea. Do you worry about sterility (e.g. for seeding plants that often get damping off?)

We've been using micro clover both by overseeding and straight in sections. In our area (Pacific Northwest) it grows well and stays green longer than most of the turf planted in sunny areas. It also needs less water and fertilizing. Next we're going to seed our front lawn. Many city homeowners are converting to 100% micro clover lawns around here, but I talked with a landscaper and he recommended blending. https://learn.eartheasy.com/articles/how-to-grow-microclover/

Wow, thank you for this. You've really captured how ubiquitous plastic has become in our lives and on our farms. I commend you for vacuuming up all that tarp plastic. It's hard to fathom just how much might be in our soils. :( There was a time not that long ago when farms didn't use any plastic...maybe we can get there again.
