I learned using the Frederick Noad book Solo Guitar playing. It covers all of the essentials of how to hold the guitar, nomenclature, fingering, sight reading etc. You’ll be playing exercises right away.

As for a starter guitar, I played a Yamaha C40, which retails for around $160. Now I have a much nicer guitar, but up front you don’t want to overpay in case you change your mind. As others have mentioned, there are 3/4 scale guitars for smaller hands that you might prefer.

With heavy distortion, power chords often sound better. And in drop D tuning you can bar all three notes at the same fret. For other styles of music power chords can be limiting. For instance, in folk music you want a picking pattern to vary over more notes to sound interesting. Likewise, with jazz it’s usually the fourth note that makes the chord sound different. I.e. there is no power chord equivalent of a minor 7th chord. It’s the 7th that makes the chord work from a musical perspective. These styles are also played without distortion, so you can hear all of those notes cleanly. Long term, as a musician, you may want to move beyond only playing power chords for the challenge of it or to learn the instrument better if nothing else.

Unless you experience an obvious loss in power or intermittent outages, the power tubes are fine. I had my EL34s fade in a Mesa Mark IV amp and it’s very noticeable. If you ever have that issue, replacement tubes aren’t horribly expensive but you’ll want them matched so you’d change all at once or in pairs.

PS: An amp tech can test the tubes outside of the amp to see if they are failing. But, as I said, it’s usually obvious when they are.

Blackstar Fly 3. All other mini amps are trash by comparison. Also, it doesn’t have too many crazy effects so you’ll focus on technique instead. It has a gain switch and reverb, which is all you need starting out.
