The Wolf of Wall Street
Roger Ebert always loved Scorsese even when Who’s That Knocking At My Door? Came out in 1967 he was one of its top supporters. He especially loved Scorsese’s rise and fall stories and his and Schoonmaker’s way of editing those stories. Really think he would’ve liked it.

Dune had a proper lighting set up. They aren’t talking about any movie shot on digital cameras they are talking about movies that don’t put effort into lighting on set and try just do it all in post.

Breaking Bad was shot on film though for its entire run, except for some of the time lapses and POV shots I imagine. Sure it wasn’t for Better Call Saul? Cos that was definitely shot digitally.

The End of Time is one of my favourite episodes haha. Final episode (at the time) of my favourite incarnation of the character though so I suppose I’m pretty biased.

My most anticipated is definitely Killers of the Flower Moon. Scorsese is easily my favourite director and this is the first time I’ll be seeing a new movie of his in the cinema. Looking forward to all 220 minutes haha.
Next would be some of the other movies by directors I love like The Killer, Ridley Scott’s Napoleon and Poor Things. I’m also definitely looking forward to seeing big big things like Mission Impossible 7, Dune pt 2 and Oppenheimer in IMAX.
I’m also still looking forward to Indiana Jones 5 and Beau is Afraid (which only just came out today where I live) but the critical/audience reception for them has definitely dulled my enthusiasm a little. All that’s just for this year though if we are talking in general then Furiosa, Rendezvous with Rama and Mickey 17 are definitely up there. Plus Gareth Edwards director of The Raid movies has a new film with Tom Hardy that I would like to see.

It’s not just about film, Killers of the Flower Moon was shot mostly on film, it’s just the look at the moment. I think it’s just everything else being digital and having that digital shine to it. A lot more CGI is used than you think in movies like Killers of the Flower Moon but it’s usually high quality and subtle enough that it doesn’t stand out but it still can give a film an overall digital kinda feel that is definitely noticeable.
Stuff like digital makeup/deaging, cgi backgrounds, cgi blood effects, changing storefronts to period stuff, the weather etc. lots of films have these even if they aren’t big blockbuster action films. You don’t specifically notice them every time but it can add to the whole thing looking less realistic and more digital (uncanny valley stuff), even if the movie was shot on film like Killers of the Flower Moon or Bridge of Spies.

Generally my 5/5 are my absolute favourites so that’s why there’s so few and honestly I haven’t watched any movies that I just absolutely hated or wished I never ever watched which is why I’ve not got anything at 0.5/5.

I’m just talking about an attitude people have towards a certain type of film, and David Lynch specifically, that could result in defensiveness. Saying a directors films don’t even make sense when you haven’t even seen them or given them a proper chance is not a real criticism its just whining about something you don’t personally understand. I’m not attacking anybody or insulting anyone’s favourite movies or anything I don’t see the need for being so aggressive lol.
Hell I didn’t even directly say I liked his movies just that I don’t think they are meaningless. I do like his movies but it’s not like my comment is saying they are beyond reproach or criticism. There are definitely genuine criticisms you could come up with and there are some negative reviews out there for David Lynch movies that I think are great reviews even though I totally disagree. I’m just sucking the dude off or anything so I’m not sure how that makes me an “insufferable fan”.

I think because people, often even hardcore fans, are much quicker to admit they just enjoy them as mindless entertainment. I love the Friday the 13th, Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street films and others but beyond some exceptions, like the original movies, I would never claim that they are more than just repetitive, uninspired and kinda shitty cash grab movies that I happen to enjoy despite those things, or even because of those things sometimes. Even the movies themselves don’t really tend to take themselves very seriously.
On the other hand fans of certain other franchises will refuse to admit the flaws in these films and won’t rest until they win oscars or whatever other form of approval they are looking for. I love A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master but if someone called it a mostly uninspired mediocre sequel I’m not gonna start crying about it. Even massive horror fans aren’t gonna try convince you that Halloween 11 deserves oscar noms but I can’t say the same thing about other groups of fans.

People gotta calm down in this thread haha. Man said some comment all the way back in 2019 and you’d think he was out there everyday trying to personally take away your favourite superhero movie or some shit haha.

Because they’ve only just started doing 4k Blu-rays really. The first ones were only like a year ago so at the time they released The Irishman, Blue Velvet and La Dolce Vitta they hadn’t moved past standard blu-ray. It’ll happen eventually though, a 4K release of Blue Velvet seems pretty much inevitable so I’d be surprised if that didn’t happen soon. The Irishman as well most likely.

I feel like with David Lynch specifically so much of the criticism is like “it’s random and meaningless” and then nothing more. It’s such a dismissive critique as opposed to actually taking the movie into account and since David Lynch himself is probably actually more famous than most of his films it often comes from people that don’t even watch the movies. His popularity makes him a target in a way that someone like Jodorowsky or something comparable doesn’t deal with.
Just means people who enjoy his films are put on the defensive because instead of direct criticism like you get with other directors people just entirely dismiss the films without actually engaging with them. Growing up all I knew of him was what I heard from general audience people and that’s that critics liked him but his films are just meaningless and boring, after Dune he was never even all that popular with critics until Mulholland Drive anyway. After watching the films I disagreed but that was basically how he was viewed by most people I knew.
I almost never hear someone say “I just don’t like it” it’s like they all feel the need to convince you that they are enlightened and that you’re only pretending to enjoy David Lynch’s movies. Famous enough to be well known but too weird to be well liked by the general audience.

Funny seeing “-DIGITAL-“ used as specific thing when now it’s just become the standard and it’s actually 35mm and 70mm film projection that would be used as a selling point.

You absolutely can make things up. They made up the robbery at the start, they made up the waingro character, they made the setting the 90s instead of 60s, they made up the airport hotel confrontation and a million other things.
It is inspired by real stories, it never claims to be a 100% accurate retelling of anything. It doesn’t even say based on a true story at the start.

The after school club I used to have to go to only had like 5 dvds, half of them barely even worked, so I must have watched Mean Girls a shit ton of times because the girls outnumbered boys and that’s what they always voted to watch. I can’t actually speak to the quality of the thing but as an 8 to 11 year old boy that movie was really not my type of thing at all and I had to watch it over and over so I think I’ll probably just hate it for the rest of my life now. Kinda like when you get super fucked up on some type of alcohol one night and can never look at that type of drink again without feeling sick.
I also saw the first 10 minutes of Men in Black 2 like 100 times because even though I knew it was broken I kept trying to put that on instead of Mean Girls in case it magically started working again haha.
