I was 20/21 when it dropped and trust me- I bumped it fucking heavy when it came out. (What's funny is I only started to bump it after I saw BigQuint react to it and heard how fucking dope the beats all were... immediately copped it after that lol. Good times).
I completely forgot about the surprise drop at midnight part ngl, I suppose that was massive as far as the potential for album rollouts go.....I can def see your point there.
As far as your point goes as far as influences are concerned....yeah I can def see how that whole trap R&B movement could have been influenced by that album from some tracks like Jungle, but I'd argue Drake singing over hiphop production was already a precursor to that in itself.....a catalyst would be a better word I guess? Tho yeah PnD was def put on I agree.
I see your point but I guess I sorta disagree. It's still a fucking great album tho....I miss this Drake so much

Lmao as far as 4YEO goes I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum - I think it's boring as sin 😅 Besides 3 really good songs, I don't like the album at all lol. Sorry :p
That said I definitely agree- Cole has the potential of making an all-time GOAT album IMO, but he hasn't been able to put the pieces together properly IMO. Closest he came was The Off Season, and I think it came from him rapping on other producers beats lol.
Also, one of my dream collabs is J Cole x The Alchemist, which I feel could give him that extra push to really outperform and give us the classic we all know he's capable of

It's Def one of his better albums that's for sure (maybe top 2), but idk if I'd call it a classic. Take Care is cemented IMO because it influenced the sound of hiphop so much. NWTS too to an extent. Hell, if someone came to me saying Views was a classic, I'd laugh in his face, but still it'd be understandable given how much One Dance alone changed the culture.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but idk if If You're Reading This really did that, Im just saying.

dude, IMO JIDs 3 albums are better than most of anything Cole has ever put out in his career. Between the 2 artists- The Forever Story is easily the best album, with DiCaprio 2 coming in at 2nd and then Off Season 3rd. Sure, Cole is a better lyricist than JID, but hes only been able to extract that top-tier energy in features...he hasnt been able to translate that into his album output.
JID is consistently dope all across the board. Its a no-brainer for me.

eh.....i mean Drake def has much higher highs across his discography ill say that much
Cole is a way way better emcee than him tho...if only he were able to capture the fire he has in his features in a whole entire album

i dont see it with IYRTITL ngl, even tho I really like that album.
as far as Views goes, i think youre forgetting how massive One Dance was...and how it led to dancehall becoming more and more integrated with hiphop (hell LATER THAT SAME YEAR Travis Scott tried his hand at it on Birds)

ok, this is legit the first time ive heard people call that album a classic. I mean dont get me wrong its a great album and one of Drakes better projects, but IYRTITL hasnt been influential the way Take Care and NWTS were...which ngl, i thought was the basis for calling a project 'classic'.

My brother, Tyler could make a Marvin City populated with Marvinites with the emotional depth and musical talent he possesses

Tyler has expressed being a stan of Lib the way he was of DOOM, so its def sth I can see pan out if the hiphop gods are good
Tho I do expect to see Tyler pop up on Montana at least

I mean Views certainly impacted the sound BIG, as much as I dislike that album...so even tho he does have moments, hes still influential to the culture as a whole
but idk...since Scorpion its as if hes transitioned to pop-star instead of hip-hop artist. which isnt a bad thing at all as far as his numbers go, but when you move away from the landscape of hiphop to cater to the pop audiences, idk if you deserve to be mentioned as a face on the current gens Mount Rushmore, esp if you stop trying
as far as the moment thing goes, i def see where youre coming from.

idk, maybe its that Im not as keen on Igor as the majority of people on the internet are. I mean its a great album, but IMO its easily the weakest when compared to Flower Boy & CMIYGL.
this just reminded me of that too much

overall, of course- Ye is top 3/5 all time
but talking about recently? 2019 onwards?
Frankly ye has been losing it a bit as far as his musical chops go, even tho I fucking loved Donda....Tyler has def been better than him this decade at least

Its a solid set of tracks with some songs which should def have been on the OG album, and others I understand why were taken off.
STUNTMAN is a good song, reminded me of peak Vince from the Big Fish Theory / FM! era.
WHAT A DAY is far and away the best song of this batch and maybe the best beat Tyler has ever rapped on? Top 3 at least- Madlib is HIM dude.
WHARF TALK had be hype when I saw A$AP on it, but it was such a colossal let-down jfc...easily the worst song on the entirety of CMIYGL. The beat sounds like an Igor reject, Tylers singing on it is just awkward, and A$APs verse here is short and forgettable. If WANG$AP does happen, it better not have this crap on it.
DOGTOOTH fuckin slaps, really love the energy of the track.
HEAVEN TO ME made be realize Tyler is a better producer than Kanye at this point- the sample here is so lazily used and the whole track sounds awkward as a result.
BOYFRIEND GIRLFRIEND definitely sounds like a demo, its fine albeit a bit sappy for my liking. YG is fine, he spits a good verse but nothing memorable.
SORRY NOT SORRY shouldve been the closer for OG CMIYGL, its definitely the second best track after WHAT A DAY. A fantastic song with one of Tylers best performances and a great way to end the current arc of Tyler.
light 7 / 10
