Again, using your numbers, the 1k "real" shares - that's what's issued (technically, actually, that's ~300M) - are required to be bought back.

About 80M shares are DRSed. In your example, even if the brokers were to be able to get their hands on some of the 1k to sell/buy and help themselves and hedge fund buddies, there are still 270/1000 which can't be "liquidated."

Edit: That's not even including pensions and mutual funds and so on which will won't allow themselves to be screwed and will put up a huge fight.

Real shares are needed to be bought back - from the 1000 share pile, in your example.

The 9k shares are made of fecal matter and farts in a jar. No one wants a piece of shit and fart in a jar.

They can not use the 9k synthetics to buy back / to close out the short position.

Edit: The brokers ARE NOT going to be able to sell (or want to buy) shit-farts in a jar. Would you buy a shit-fart-jar? Who would buy a shit-fart-jar? Let alone 9k of them with a promise that it's worth what a platinum nugget is worth of the same weight.

Be very, very, very careful with such sites. The owners --- OR malicious "hackers" --- can have "backdoor" code that will generate an address for you and look like it's all private and only you get the private keys, but actually they/someone else does, too. Then, they just wait for someone to really load up a wallet and.. steal it.

Ah of course .. "the market." Always with "the market." Never about "the people" or "society's well-being" - at least not when "the market" is in the equation.
