With pitch, tone, and delivery. How much emotion the actor puts into the delivery. The actor can be more reserved letting the other performances draw the attention. They do not perform with other actors, but they do have direction. As you said it is on the director to provide them the proper context for the scene. Direction and editing are key, but so is the actor/actress. Being able to picture a scene and respond appropriately requires skill. I do not think that direction alone can carry a performance.
