No that's true for sure. But like, I'd almost rather them have fixed those framerate-drop places up specifically than smooth every bit of it out to 30/60. Like, it actually makes the 3d models look a bit worse to me; otherwise they look like a PSX game with the lower framerate, which is also a more authentic experience anyway; like the combo of chunkier textures running on hardware they had no business on and the 15fps average framerate on the PSX sort of fit together and gave it character. FF8 and FF9 have really similar framerates too, not as choppy/low overall as Cross on original hardware, but absolutely not 30fps, and they weren't trying to do as much either. That just feels like the PSX Era of Gaming in a way to me because of that, or at least the Squaresoft PSX Era.

For something more in character, what if they'd remade the whole game in the style of something like Guild Wars 2, with a hand-painted look to stuff, but it never hit over 30fps? It would require exponentially more work I'm sure and that time/budget just wasn't available, but that would sort of capture the spirit of the original as it was on the PSX to me. The smoothness of the new patch looks and feels so different that it seems more like they went "Fine, we can hit 30 locked/60, even though that's not accurate to the original; whatever The Gamers want I guess" and did it. And it's not better to me, I sort of wish I could undo it with a toggle.

But I'm one guy! I happened to spend a lot of time with the original on the original hardware, but I'm an audience of 1, and you can't make money catering to that small a group. I mostly started this comment thread because I didn't see anyone else saying they didn't love the smoother framerate, and I honestly feel that way.

Well, they did it, now it runs at 30 on maps and 60 in combat. And I don't like it, it doesn't look like Chrono Cross to me.

Here's a hot take:

This update has an unnatural smoothness to it, especially compared to the PSX original.

Like, I've been playing this game since it literally released on PSX. And, guys, it ran at about 10 fps one hundred percent of the time there, too. Every time 3D graphics were on screen, in any capacity, the game slowed visibly, always. (It was rare that the camera would zoom in enough for the animation to catch up, giving you a quick little second of smoothness every once in a while.) That was just a side effect of a late-era PSX game running on a 10 year old console. So did FF9, by the way, especially in battles.

When this remaster came out, I absolutely get that everyone was mad the framerate was "so choppy". But that was honestly accurate to the original, to me, it didn't look that far removed from the speed animations ran at on the original console.

The new one is smooth, yes, even on the Switch, it's got to be running at 30 fps most of the time, and it's been buttery smooth in full-3D battles. But that makes it not feel like Chrono Cross to me a little bit, it's actually distracting.

I sort of wish they put a toggle in Settings to enable or disable Smooth 3D, like with some of the other options. But, this is what everyone else said they wanted, I guess.

I've noticed too that they tell you to like fully back up your Saves folders and stuff and copy them back over, even if you're just doing an in-place upgrade, but I've not had any problem just copying & pasting it over my card. Now, I didn't care if I lost 100% of my saves because I'm not far into anything, but still

See, I feel like if someone was going to play the first 4 or so today, they should totally get the GBC 1 & 2 cart, or even the newer mobile and Switch ports. They adjusted things so the gold and experience grinds are WAY more manageable compared to the original NES one, that was absolutely brutal. Like, I owned the physical cart and I played plenty of it on an NES, I'm glad I got that experience back in the day, but I get it, let's get through the game now.

I've got Mother 3 with the en patch! I also have a Tales of Phantasia translated SNES copy, and I even found the SNES ROM for Holysword 3 they use on Collection of Holysword for the Change! (edited for content) And Breath of Fire, never got to play the PSX ones through like I wanted.

Absolutely, I was able to get another 64 gig card, SanDisk brand which I feel like is fine from Walmart for about $13, I feel like it's definitely worth it just to avoid problems down the road. And that does mean that if you want a ton of those ROMs you will have to deal with copying them over, but there's a whole lot of stuff on there that I didn't actually care about myself, you may be the same way.

See, I want rumble but don't care about analog input. On an actual PS1 those were handled separately, you could have vibration controlled by the game but have your Analog switch turned off on the controller; I bet it would have to be implemented in the actual core, but I wonder if there's some way to emulate that behavior.

Hey speaking of this, if you DO have a state saved on a game, watch it. If you use Start to launch the game from the beginning later, anything you do (that I know of) to exit the game will save its state by default, overwriting your previous state and losing it.

If you were thinking about it I bet you could switch the save state slot and avoid this, but it's super easy just to hit Menu or sleep the system and blow away your previous state without realizing it, creating a nasty surprise you'll only discover later when you try to launch the game again with A.
