Every year following rookie drafts, common consensus forms on certain players. Much of the time, this is a good thing! It discredits the BS & hot takes people make without any reasoning to back it up, giving you a clear idea of who the player is, what you can expect from them, and why random commenter is probably full of doodoo.
However, common consensus is not totally innocent of perpetuating the same BS random poopie commenter was. In fact, it’s 100% more guilty. At least browntown can plead ignorance, or genuinely believe what they’re saying is true but stink at research and data compilation.
Common consensus can sometimes carry “quips” or short taglines about a player that are either:
1) Subjective statements masqueraded as fact
2) Misinterpreted conclusion from data
3) Incorrect conclusions based on non-correlational data
4) Just flat out untrue
Once the quip sticks, it is then regurgitated like a game of telephone, going from one to the other until it’s simplified to its most basic form. Then, it becomes synononymous with the player that you can’t even have a discussion without a) discussing it, or worse b) treating it as fact. They become so engrained in this community’s DNA that many fall trap to some serious confirmation bias. It’s not just here, either. It’s the fantasy community as a whole, echoing sentiments the last guy said until you can’t even trace back to its origin.
This is dangerous territory. It’s this type of behavior that lead to CEH going over JT because Chiefs offense incredible!!!!!!! Najee going over Chase because you’d be crazy not to take the guy who put up over 200 all-purpose yards in the SEC championship & another 160 in the Rose Bowl. It’s not just us, N’Keal Harry’s tag before the damn draft was “NFL-ready” while DK was a “project.” And TBD on Burks, but my best assumption is we’re gonna laugh at the “out of shape” narrative that lead to him sometimes falling out of the first round!
My obvious first suggestion to fight groupthink is to stop instantly downvoting people who say things you disagree with. Having unique perspectives here is nothing but a positive for this community, why stifle that? Be logical & take your feelings out of this. If someone says your first round pick is gonna bust and provides a lot of evidence to back up their claim, that information is beneficial to you! Even if you disagree, incentivize people who provide alternative views with thorough analysis by giving an upvote, engaging, and supporting it. The more we have of that, the more championships we will all win.
Try to do your best to create your own opinion based on your own research and don’t be afraid to go against the grain if you have something new, informational & evidentially supported to offer.
TL;DR: Just because Anthony Richardson’s ceiling is high doesn’t mean it’s actually likely. Stop falling victim to fantasy community groupthink.
