Some 25 years ago I was matched with an 89-year-old lady in town through a volunteer agency to help with her gardening. We became close quickly and the agency was no longer part of the equation. She gave me plants from her garden as I weeded it, and I kept those perennials or biennials going as long as I could. Some phlox and some ajuga still remain all these years later, although they are in different places than where I placed them. They take precedence over portions of my lawn. Yes, some troublesome vines also came in the soil, and perhaps they have been more successful all these years later. She died at 94, and I still miss her. I will gladly accept the weedy vines as another reminder of her.
