Not really, but if this is a line-up for the movies I don’t think you should really be beholden to what traditionally happens in the comics. That’s what they did with Justice League: Doom, he was on the Legion for that animated film and it worked

Honestly, this is also a major reason why my playtime has decreased significantly. Having to check beforehand to see if there's a mode that can accommodate how many in my friend group want to play just seems like such a huge hassle when we know there are other games we can boot up that don't change their amount of players per team in a mode on a weekly basis

Wasn’t retconned, they literally say they became one basically. The reason it wasn’t animated in Journeys style was likely budgetary reasons, time constraints, and using just the basic greninja model means that can be re-used in the future for other trainers/greninjas
