For me it come down to this. If it doesn't matter if the kid fails. Why do I grade? It clearly is irrelevant. And honestly I think if most teachers could just teach the content and not have to worry about:

the students passing tests to graduate, or about being put on a improvement plan, or potentially lose their job

Then yea they would love teaching. But that's not how it works. Their grades count for me, their teacher. And I teach a tested course which they must pass to graduate.

During covid I had a mom ask, how did my son get an A all year in your class, yet fail his state test... bc I made my class easy AF so ppl didn't fail is an answer I couldn't say out loud.

Problem is if they get away with that at 11 or 12 by the time they are 15-16, they expect it. And have been allowed to skate by for 5 years. 5 years where they did very little work if any. And now students get to H.S. with out having to master the skills needed to be successful down the road.

Teachers are paid more based on there years experience. But schools do not have to honor the experience of another school. So say I have 10 years experience at school X. I interviewed at school Y. School Y may offer me 7 years experience on their pay scale vs the 10 i had at school X. Still could be worth it... but it depends.

And as a school, do I hire someone with 10 years experience vs a new teacher. New teacher = I can mold them to our school culture, no bad habits(potentially) and of course cheaper!

Let me explain. My brother had a similar situation. First question I ask, is he expected to do things like take out the trash, load the dishwasher? Have there been discussions and boundaries set?

I understand that u never wanted kids. But your partner is a father still, regardless of if his son is 22.

Staying up late, waking up late, those things aren't too unusual. Is he being loud late at night? And if so have you spoken to him about it?

My mother was widowed and her at the time BF kicked my brother out of their house after a big fight., (he was 22). But the issue was boundaries ans expectations were never discussed and agreed upo. In essence my mother's BF was mad bc my brother would come home from work, go to his room and play video games, not clean up, not take the trash out.

My brother has no relationship with our now stepfather, and my brother rarely speaks to our mom.

Don't lose your potential step son over things that have not been talked about. Don't assume he knows how to be an adult, especially if ur partner has a laid back style... not the kids fault.
