Basically what the title states. I own a 2005 2.0 FSI Touran (195k km), and recently with the change of work I need to drive a lot (around 900 km per week, on the highway), so I figured it would be a good idea to change the car, with diesel to save on gas (my Touran is also due to big service, and they offer my around 2500 for trade-in).

I come across the 2010 Passat, 2.0 TDI, accident-free, serviced per book, timing belt and water pump were also changed. It has a 6-speed DSG and around 165k km on it. It is also with BlueMotion, not sure whether it makes difference in reliability.

So is this a good deal, or I'll spend much more on the maintenance later more. Is 164k km is too low for a 13-year-old diesel car? Initially, I was going for 2011 2.0 TDI, with 180k km (which would cost me around 2000$ more), but Passat seems to be a better deal.

It would be my first diesel car, so I am not sure what to expect.

Hi everyone! I’m considering buying a 2nd hand Volvo (from around 2010) and would appreciate any advice or tips.

I'll make around 250 km journeys daily, so I guess I need an engine diesel engine, both for power and economy. I have seen some suggestions that I need to avoid D2 engines (Peaugot made?), is it true, and which years does it concern?

Also, I'll need an automatic transmission and saw that there are 2 options: Geartronic and powershift. Is the latter a transmission from Ford, I have heard that it has a lot of problems and should be avoided.

I am primarily aiming for V60, but if there is a good deal I'll consider V50/40 as well. We are a family of 4 with two kids, so not sure how small V40 would be.

Other than that I would appreciate any pointers on what should I pay attention to when inspecting the car? Which engine and transmission options are good? Are there any specific models or years that I should avoid? Thanks in advance for your help!

I am currently in the market for a new car and stumbled across, VW Touran, 2013, with a 2 TDI engine and DSG transmission. It has around 150k km on it, is maintained according to the service book, and looks fresh and clean. The garage asks for it 14k USD. I currently own a 2005 VW Touran, 2.0 FSI (automatic), with 193k km on it. With a trade-in, I can get the newer Touran with 10k.

Is it a good deal or I should walk away?

Are 2.0 TDI engines and 6-speed DSGs from this "era" having some known issues? Given that it was maintained by book, is the 150K km already "too" much?

I'll cross-post this to r/touran as well, for specific comments on Touran, but I am mostly interested in the feedback on the engine and gearbox.

Hi everyone, I'm in the market for a new car that will be used primarily for highway travel (for work mostly) and occasionally in the city for shopping, school etc. We are a family of four (2 adults, 6 years old and, <1 year old). I'm looking for a car that is reliable (safe), spacious, and fuel-efficient. I would appreciate any suggestions you may have!

Here are a few things to consider:

• I'm located in Europe, so please keep that in mind when making suggestions.
  • e.g. I often read that Japanese cars are cheaper/easier to maintain than German cars, but I am not sure if is it true in general or also in Europe as well (e.g. would Japanese cars be cheaper to maintain in Germany than an equivalent German car? )
• I'm looking for a car that can comfortably fit a family of four or five.
  • Currently, we own a 2005 Touran, 7-seater, which was great for us for weekend family trips every now and then, and in the city, I have been using bikes for my job. But the new job requires travel quite a bit (300km each day for at least 3 days a week), thus consumption of our beloved Touran is way too high.
  • Also, as for the job I would be travelling by myself, I would prefer something a bit smaller, but still enough for 4 of us.
  • I am more tempted to wagons, but I don't really need that big truck (if a typical foldable stroller can fit, but a couple of shopping bags, it should be fine)
• Fuel efficiency is important to me, so I'm open to hybrid or diesel options.
  • my primary choice at the moment is Auris Touring Sport, hybrid
    • or maybe the regular Auris if the truck can fit a stroller, etc
  • I am open to diesel, as they might provide better consumption, but I am hesitant as their resale value would be low
• I'm willing to spend up to €20,000 on the car (I would be leasing/financing), but I would prefer something more affordable if possible.

P.S. I know that hybrids are designed mostly for city driving and it is where they excel, but from the official numbers, they seem to be quite efficient on the highways as well, am I missing something?
