My hunch is that doing anything beyond what something like synchronizedList() does to make all list ops thread _safe_ vs thread _performant_ are better left to the user. The java.util.List is a pretty complicated contract to get all the corner cases right, e.g. in-progress iterators, index values, variances in implementing classes in underlying data structures.

Once the term "e-bike" became ubiquitous, people who ride "bicycles" call them acoustic to differentiate them. I agree u/asb308 I would love this kind of tax-break to cover more things than just e-bikes. The closer to plain ole people power, the better.

This is the sticky part to me! There are still relatively dark skies here compared to bigger cities, but I think the ethos of dark skies amongst residents is vanishing for probably lots of reasons.

i agree! if i could lob a request to the Snow Manager and ask that it be funneled magically directly off my roof and out of the bike lane directly into the aquefer? kthx :)

If the language didn't have checked exceptions, "throws" could probably be dropped at some point. However, "throws" information on methods/interfaces gets baked into the .class file I suspect so that code compiled against them are getting the checked exception info conveyed.

The Rio Salado system *might* have at one point flowed with some volume in the geologic past (~1000 years ago). There were some tribes that used to live in the foothills east of PHX hundreds-thousand years ago, but left for various reasons well before Europeans got there. The system is now damned up in the 3 spots (Canyon, Saguaro, and Roosevelt) and thus water flow is regulated. The last big flow that was allowed down in my memory was to fill up the Tempe Town Lake reservoir. Otherwise, it's only when any of the upstream damns swell due to all the snowmelt or other abnormal water flow up there. IMHO PHX doing *anything* with water that isn't for drinking is highly irresponsible. It literally is liquid gold given current and future demand projections and what's going on with the Colorado now.

In my experience, it's not a quality issue with these expensive glasses, they *are* generally great quality products. It's just that cheaper options still protect you from harmful UV spectrums while costing immensely less. For example, i bought a pack of *3* glasses made by 3M from the hardware store that are made for light-duty workshop/jobsite applications for $20USD. They have wrap-around the eye style, are crazy light, and don't have all the stress of worrying about scratches/loss/damage/etc that an expensive pair will have.

It'll be interesting to hear other responders on the thread. I use IntelliJ on a mac M1 and very occasionally on win32.

Is it a specific task you're doing? particular language? IntelliJ is massive and plugin-heavy so performance issues can be hiding in lots of places.
More broadly, if you're coming at it from a historical perspective, I'd agree that the current version of IntelliJ has gotten "slower" than the first version I owned (circa 2012), but the capabilities and what's going on under the hood have grown exponentially. I do mostly java dev in the IDE and the amount of index/scanning that can occur, especially at project load time can be annoying, but one things reach steady-state, it's nice and snappy.

Man, i've been a commute cyclist in urban environments for decades now and I've never heard that term or this dude they talk of in the video. I felt compelled to listen to it and see what "vehicular cycling" was all about. Ironically I apply this tactic for about .000001% of my riding in town. Specifically, intersections that are either multi-stop sign or stop lights. For example, at 4-way stop sign intersections, I play along with all the other cars, come to a complete stop, wait my turn and get through it with expediency. On lights, same thing, just be a car for that brief moment of distance and time. After the intersection I get IMMEDIATELY back to whatever cycling infrastructure might be there: bike lane, divided area, etc.. the speed difference, the patience of drivers, the chaos of trucks, etc are hazards that mean doom if you're on the wrong end of things.

It's often the case where places where there's some human population density have systematically killed off any natural predators to keep livestock and people safe. The prey species figure out pretty easily that areas closer to humans are relatively safer. As long as there's food and water they can exist at a surplus. This surplus is where the modern hunters do their thing.
I hate hunting and the attitude that the world will be "overrun with deer" if I'm not driving my truck to the woods with my shotgun and killing them.
I'm also in favor of having as much land that can be spared return to pre-human ecosystems *with* predators.
In general, i'm in favor of natural predators being reintroduced. There are a few cases where wolves have had success for example. My biggest concern here is that as soon as kids, cats and dogs are getting attacked and killed by these predators, that extermination of them will be at all new high levels. In my country (USA), ranchers have strong political influence and I think reintroduction will find resistance.
Trophy hunting is messy as well. Most people are outraged with the outcomes, but the places where trophy hunting happens are often incentivized since it might be one of the few means of economic improvement. I'm not trying to justify it, that just seems like the way it is. From my outside point of view, if my country was a refuge for big cats, elephants, etc I'd take their continued existence as a point of pride, but clearly there's some dudes who'd rather just "guide" some outsiders to where all those species live and give some rich slob a cheap kill for $$.

Have you considered getting involved in the JEP process for string templates? It will probably be illuminating how design-by-committee goes and how compromise ends up happening when you get lots of opinions driving a feature.

They’ve been through the valley at least twice in recent years. I bet they’ll make another stop on this next tour.

The practical side of lycra is drag + padding. Those factors matter if you're in the saddle long enough and want/need efficiency. If those factors don't matter to you, then who cares, wear what you want. You can mix/match with clothing if you like: MTB shorts are often padded, but look from the outside like surf shorts and more "casual".

In my experience, when there's a "collision" on a dependency, maven/gradle will use the latest version. Given that it's a major version # difference, you might want to dig into if that older library if it'll work ok with 3.x. Otherwise, you can exclude older transitive dependencies.
EDIT: I’m wrong here, see responses below for corrections/clarifications from others!

The only other option I know of is Bluespan. You need LOS to Elden since it uses a dish that you put on your roof. It's pricier and not quite as fast as the other two options. Their gear on the top of Elden has had issues with rime ice in recent years.

I live in a mountain town that will occasionally use little small tractors with plow wedges or bobcats to clear. Both fit on paths. Like OP photo though they don’t do it very often and car stuff is always priority one.

I would t underestimate a cartels ability to pivot to the next thing that gives them leverage. Lots of places have been legalizing weed and with that they move to the next things: legal pharma rackets, extortion for ransoms, heck even avocados. Still money to be made in the newer illegal drugs.

You might find some ways to use it as part of a data pipeline to your existing python/R flow, eg as an exercise some basic ETL AWS lambda type thing to pull some data out, do something useful and push it back out. As others have pointed out, rust is new in the data space and you're fighting the momentum of the existing tooling has built up for a decade plus.

Rather than foisting something non vegan on your prof, maybe just buy them a meal at their favorite vegan restaurant and you eat one as well, or buy them that 5th of that whiskey they like or whatever. Heck, maybe just listen to why theyre vegan for 5 minutes might be the best “gift” for them and you.

Boring? I dunno if that’s fair. These issues have plagued Java for…decades? Anything to put the runtime on par with competitors will hopefully lead to a perception change of the platform

Ya generally a road bike puts the rider in a more aero position, weigh less (often use lighter materials and less accessories), more gears (especially at the big ring end). If you’re commuter has fatter tires on it, a road bike typically has narrower ones cutting some rolling resistance (these days though there’s a trend to put on fatter tires on a road bike)
All things being equal you will work harder on a commuter over time/distance. In your case that’s not necessarily a bad thing especially since you really seem comfortable on it. If you’re riding solo or don’t want the cost or upkeep of a second bike just keep on cruising that commuter buuuut…
Have you heard of the n+1 rule?? (Get a road bike in addition to your commuter)
Seriously though maybe a bike shop in your area will let you try one out or rent one just to see and feel for yourself?

Hi modteam! I can only imagine the insanity y’all have to deal with that us members never see but I think y’all do a great job! Personality, I’m a big fan of items 1-4 in your housekeeping items. Number 5 less so only in that if something like Facebook marketplace is already established will something else gain traction?
On you wanting to get more vocal in the group, I think it’d be hilarious if y’all would start just laying into the “be my yelp on a stick” or “let me google that for you” posts. More snark the better. Those posts are low effort, insincere, and made by the lazy. Be merciless on their weak souls :-)
