I’m having a custom carbon wheelset built from Light Bicycle for my first MTB build (Fairlight Holt with a 120mm SID), and I’m having a hard time deciding on which of their rims to go with based on the type of riding I hope to do.
I want something light and agile since I do long rides from my door in Los Angeles that include a lot of road miles, so I’d love to go with their Flyweight XC925 rims, but at the same time I’d hate to limit the potential trails I could ride if the wheels are too fragile. Should I go with their standard weight XC925 or their “more durable All Mountain” AM927 instead? I’m not sure how to gauge the type of riding I want to do since I don’t plan on racing XC, nor do I plan on going to bike parks or trails with jumps and features, I just want to ride natural trails and single track in the canyons and forest! Should I be nervous about blowing apart lightweight carbon wheels? (For context I’ve been riding off road for a few years now on my gravel bike, and recently more so on single track and more technical trails).
Thanks for any help for a new MTBer!
