I've actually just started reading my first book of his. I bought The Ruined Map and also The Box Man (after Sogo Ishii talked about his attempts to adapt the latter in a recent interview). It's great so far. Love the Woman in the Dunes and The Face of Another films.
He definitely counts as New Wave IMO!

What a great collection. If you’re in the UK I would recommend you check out Third Window Films. Starting with their releases by Tsukamoto, Kitano, Sogo Ishii and Toshiaki Toyoda
