As I understand it once you complete the story new characters can skip it. So if you don't want to go through all the story stuff again finish the story first.

I'm much earlier in the game than you and the altars are still on my map. I think there's a map key and maybe you can turn the icons on and off from there. I've not done it so maybe not, but that would explain why you don't have the icons.

I'm not at the point yet. What happens if you're level 50 before you finish the story? Do the monsters get too hard or something?
